The Germans have a word for it: doppelgänger, expressing the concept that everyone, somewhere in the world, has someone who looks just like them. My favourite online art magazine DailyArt.com had a fun article this week on doppelgängers and art: famous people who look just like painted portraits of other people.
That’s Maggie Smith above, with her lookalike Lady in blue by Paul Cézanne. And here is actor Kianu Reeves with 16th century Italian gentleman by Parmigianino.
All in all, author Vithória Konzen Dill has drawn together 15 famous people and their artistic lookalikes. I am not utterly convinced about all of them. Do you think, for instance, that this self-portrait by Zygmunt Waliszewski really looks like actor Benedict Cumberbatch?
Why not see for yourself by browsing through Vithória’s article, which you can read by clicking here. It will be a fun five minutes or so, and you can make your own minds up on the likes of Robert De Niro, Mark Zuckerberg and Nicole Kidman in the gallery.
And when you have done that why not spend another few minutes reserving your place on one of next year’s Watermill famous artistic courses. (Just yourself: your doppelgänger comes free!)
Now really is the time to reserve your place: at the last count we had 216 people booked into our creative courses, out of a potential total of some 260, so next year’s courses are filling fast. And you’ve only a few weeks now to take advantage of our Early Bird offer: £75 (English pounds) off each of our 2023 creative weeks if you book before the end of this year.
Below you will find dates and links for all our 2023 courses. Just click on the link of the ones you like to find out more detail. You will see that some of our creative weeks are already fully booked, but if you fancy that particular week or that particular tutor, don’t despair: there are often cancellations. Please get in touch via the Watermill Contact Form (by clicking here) and we will put you on a waiting list.
