Painting the warm light in an Italian seaside town, with Mike Willdridge
The Watermill is situated in the province of Massa-Carrara, in the Italian region of Tuscany. In the old days, the sea was much nearer to them, but over the centuries the erosion of the high Apennine mountains has deposited trillions of particles of sandstone on the coasts, putting the cities well inland, and enabled the creation of seaside resorts like Marina di Massa and Marina di Carrara. Mike’s subject for his first online interactive session will be a few bicyclists cycling along the coast road (and a red traffic light thrown in for good measure!)
Here, below is the source photo:
Mike says: “This painting focus is on the light effects known as ‘contra jour’ - against the light. The challenge is to paint the warmth of the sunlight (almost in our eyes) through the use of contrasting values and warm and cool colours.”
Like Randy, Mike would like you to make your drawing before his session starts. (See above for details of what you will receive when you register for a Watermill interactive online session.)
Mike Willdridge is very experienced in a variety of painting and drawing media as well as printmaking. After many years teaching adults in Devon, he now lives and works in West Dorset.
He is an energetic and enthusiastic teacher who encourages his students to be bold and take chances. He is particularly keen on all forms of drawing and constantly uses a sketchbook. These days, however, he restricts his teaching to an annual visit to the Watermill, demonstrations to local art groups and, more recently, online sessions in conjunction with the Watermill. More details in the story above on what happens next on all our interactive online sessions.

Knit yourself happy – and creative
The health benefits of knitting are widespread and well known. Knitting is relaxing and calming, reducing stress and anxiety. It stimulate the brain and improves the memory. It is good for the blood pressure and the soul. And, particularly on a Watermill knitting course, under the dappled shade of the find verandah, it also engenders convivial conversation and creates new friendships.
Add to that the joy of creation: our knitting tutors each bring a project (or two) for our guests to make during the week, often inspired by the amazing Tuscan countryside round the Watermill: cowls, hats, shawls, gloves, cushion covers – and tuition and tips in, among other things, colour-work, bead-work, intarsia and cable. Join one of our world-renowned courses and knit yourself healthy, happy and creative.
You will see from the list below that many of the 2024 knitting courses already fully booked, but don’t despair, there are often cancellations, so if you’re keen on a particular tutor, or a particular date, please get in touch via the Watermill’s Contact Form and we’ll put you on a waiting list.

How travel can boost your creativity
There is an interesting article in WritersWrite, an online resource for aspiring writers (and ancient ones like Bill!), outlining how travel can boost your creativity. Author Susan Bennett suggests that travel is the ideal way to gather new material to create characters (even their names, from place-names discovered on your travels), plots and dialogue, as well as giving us fresh settings to describe. Travel, she says, makes us leave our comfort zones and puts a new perspective on our lives, leading us to question our own thoughts and routines.
Among her top tips was Susan also recommends looking for local curious events: “Anything that strikes you as odd must go into your notebook. Here’s an example: There’s a castle in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) from which you have a spectacular view of the city. I went there and noticed that someone had carved his name and a date into the rocks of the castle’s tower, ‘Alvarez 1930.’ That’s 90 years before my time! What view must Alvarez have seen in 1930? The city must have looked different. Just like that, I had a story.”
To read all Susan’s top tips about travel writing, please click here. And where better place to combine travel writing inspiration then on Jo Parfitt’s Writing Your Life Stories course at the Watermill?Jo will be with us for another fantastic writing week from Saturday 21 September to Saturday 28 September 2024 and we still have a few places left. (While concentrating on autobiography and memoir, the course gives insights and advice for writing in any genre.) We have inspirational settings, interesting characters, rich history, convivial conversation with other aspiring writers, but above all we have Jo Parfitt.
Jo Parfitt is an author, journalist, teacher, blogger, conference speaker and poet. She has published 32 books herself, has helped more than 250 authors get into print and more than 2,000 people to begin writing. Jo's a compassionate, inspiring, and encouraging teacher: her motto is 'sharing what I know to help others to grow'.
The Write Your Life Stories creative writing course is designed to help you produce your best work, to find your true writer's 'voice' and to write authentically. Among other things, you’ll discover the secret of SPICE, the seven steps to writing life stories. Jo says: "The course at the watermill will provide a safe haven in which to unlock your creativity, write from your heart and hone your writing craft. You will be empowered to write in a compelling way, bringing your experiences to life."

Here are some comments from guests on Jo’s previous courses at the Watermill: “The most magical trip to Tuscany, which will stay with me forever!” “It is a very special and beautiful place, and everything was organised so perfectly. Jo is a great tutor, and we all had an amazing time.”

You will need to use your hands to speak Italian properly
One of Bill’s Christmas presents was a little book by Bruno Munari called Supplemento al dizionario italiano (Supplement the Italian Dictionary), an essential volume if you want to speak the language properly. It explains the hand gestures which every Italian needs to communicate. In fact, they find it impossible speak without using them, as this amusing little video shows:
We won’t neglect these essential (and irrepressible) hand gestures when teaching you proper Italian in our unique language course at the Watermill, from Saturday 19 October to Saturday 26 October 2024. Not only will you soak up the sights and sounds of the language in daily ‘formal-but-fun’ lessons on the vine verandah (some 20 hours in the week), but you will also make excursions to savour the natural beauty of Lunigiana, the area around the mill, to explore its history and culture, to sample its traditional foods – and above all, to meet the people, speak Italian, and practise what you’ve learned.
The Watermill has teamed up again with tutor Giulia Balestri for a week in which you can learn Italian in the most natural and enjoyable way. Your immersion into the language and culture of real Italians will be customised for you, to suit your curiosity and your interests. Watch this video to see what some of the participants on last year’s course had to say.

Whether you're travelling alone or with a partner you can be sure of a warm welcome, and that you'll be well looked after. We have built our reputation on the comfort of the mill and the care we provide.
