Painting by watermill tutor Paul Talbot-Greaves

Down the valley from Fivizzano

Watercolours

In this painting I made the most of a flat light day by adding brightness to the foreground and infusing plumes of smoke to draw attention to the building.

Streetside, Verrucola

Watercolours

This was a demonstration of light and shadow, starting with pale washes and building the shadows before adding the detail.

In the grounds of Il Convento dei Carmine

Watercolours

Whilst the cloisters make a beautiful subject, there are many other compositions around the site. In this painting I focussed on the beautiful light through the trees.

Profile

Watercolours (and acrylics)

Paul Talbot-Greaves is a professional painter from England, working primarily in watercolour, although he also works with acrylic. He says: “I like to seek out compositions employing patterns of light, shade and contrast. At home, I enjoy painting wild places or capturing the timeless essence and atmosphere of the South Pennine landscape where I live.”

Paul has achieved many accolades over the years (He has just been made a member of the prestigious Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours) and won many awards, but, while he appreciates the recognition, he always prefers to allow his work to speak for itself. During his career, he has worked with some of the world’s biggest publishers and he has had four books published on watercolour painting. He is a regular contributor to The Artist magazine. Paul is also a very experienced teacher. He says: “I have been teaching painting through courses and workshops over the last 20 years, where I get an enormous amount of pleasure seeing people improve and enjoy their own work.”

Praise for Paul’s last course at the Watermill

My wife and I have just returned from a splendid week at the Watermill. She, as a nonpainter, enjoyed joining the painters’ off-site trips, the walks, the excursion to Cinque Terre, and of course the tranquil surroundings of the Mill for reading, relaxing and exploring. The painters had a stimulating and diligent tutor who ensured we made the most of the beautiful landscape opportunities as well as the spacious studio. We give top marks to the whole Watermill experience - the setting, the programme, the accommodation, the wining and dining and of course our attentive and generous hosts and their lovely staff. So grateful for his fantastic demos, humour and encouraging guidance. Paul Talbot-Greaves graciously coaches each participant to push boundaries with more bold and free-flowing techniques- but respects the various individual styles. This week was beyond my expectations… in every way; Lois, Bill, Karsten, Paolo, the chef, the staff- attend to every detail. The location is a hidden gem with surprise little corners, gardens, waterside walks, picturesque terraces… and inspiring art everywhere. Food - Bellisimo! Organized SO well. The most lovely group of painters from all over. Total joy! GRAZIE. MH

Praise from some of Paul’s previous students

I just wanted to say a how much we enjoyed our time at the Watermill. The combination of the place, the excellent art course with Paul Talbot-Greaves and the care from you and your staff made a really lovely experience. KMcA

A great big thank you to you and Bill (and all your staff too) for making my week so pleasurable. Paul said I had improved as the week went on so that was a bonus. It was a relaxed atmosphere, a good crowd and an attentive staff making it all so enjoyable. It was just what I needed to boost my ego! KH

I have never received such great treatment on a holiday. You all couldn't have been kinder. Everything was 5-star, from the food to the bedrooms, to all of your staff. It couldn't have been any better. Your organisation of the week was amazing, down to the very last detail. Thank you again. CG

“It is one thing to be proficient as an artist and it is another skill to impart knowledge and teach effectively! These two experiences do not necessarily go together. No problem for you! Highly organised, good timing, excellent 'pitch' ...clear and progressive lessons, culminating in a session using all learned techniques...wonderful.” - Chris (retired teaching professional)
