At this time of family warmth and (occasional) overindulgence it seems appropriate to commemorate the gallant Ukrainian people suffering through devastation, deprivation and cold.
So today, courtesy of the online DailyArt magazine, we are celebrating the life of Lyubov Panchenko, who, “despite extreme opposition, dared to celebrate her Ukrainian identity through colourful folk art collages.†Tragically, the 84-year-old artist died during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Lyubov Panchenko (1938-2022) was a revolutionary folk artist who overcame a lifetime of obstacles in pursuit of her work. It began when she enrolled in art school against her family’s wishes and culminated when she died on 30 April 2022, weeks into a hunger strike in protest of Russia’s violent invasion of Ukraine. As we enjoy the holiday with our friends and family we will be thinking of continuing suffering of the Ukrainian people.
