Introducing our new 2024 painting tutors: Michael Solovyev

We have four exciting new painting tutors next year, and we would like to introduce them to you one by one in our next monthly newsletters. First, we are pleased to welcome Michael Solovyev, who is often called a “sunny watercolourist” – his airy, transparent artworks, like the one above, look as though they emit the sunlight.
Michael will be with us from Saturday 22 June to Saturday 29 June 2024 and he’s called his week ‘Atmospheric Landscape in Watercolour: Studio/Plein Air’. We are looking forward immensely to seeing how the Tuscan light and the beautiful scenery surrounding the mill influence his painting.

Born in Russia in 1972, Michael has chosen Montréal, Canada as his home since 2011. His traditional academic art education, extensive experience as a head theatre stage designer, and oil painter career now inform his priority as a watercolor artist – light.
Michael will show you how to paint luminous landscapes and add emotions to artwork. During the course, we will combine exercises and training in the studio with work en plein air to consolidate your skills.

Michael will share personal secrets and techniques that allow you to create an impressive emotional watercolor in a few simple steps. It is the individual approach to each student, as well as the generosity with which he shares all the tricks and professional secrets, that make his workshops so popular all over the world. You can expect plenty of individual attention and helpful demonstrations all the time.

Knitting tutor of the month: Susan Crawford

Meet Susan Crawford: knitwear designer, author, fashion historian, entrepreneur – and Watermill knitting tutor. Not a bad combination! She runs her own business, creating and manufacturing yarn and publishing her well-known book titles including A Stitch in Time, Evolution and The Vintage Shetland Project, which are cherished by knitters worldwide.
Her love of textiles, vintage fashions and wool come together in her knitting pattern designs, her books and her yarns, produced near her from British-bred sheep.

Susan is particularly well-known for her Fair Isle designs and her love of colour. She has combined these twin passions for the special project for you to knit during her your week here: a beautiful colour-work cowl, inspired by the Tuscan countryside surrounding the Watermill. Details about this later.
