Finishing the hat… well, sweater
In Sunday in the Park with George – an excellent musical inspired by pointillist painter Georges Seurat – Sondheim posits that the creative process is one of an isolating and all-consuming nature. The song Finishing the Hat further drives this point home, but offers the compromise of the rush of fulfilment for completing his new masterpiece. He has created a hat “where there never was a hat”.
Here at The Watermill, we’re not sure we totally believe that art is a solitary process. In fact, we rather advocate for a more convivial experience. One that aligns itself with a slow travel mentality that doesn’t put pressure on producing a finished product by the end of the week. Yes, we often have a show-and-tell on Friday, but the occasion is more to celebrate the company we shared than to scrutinise the number of works created. Often, guests finish their projects at their leisure when they return home: hopefully with the renewed sense of peace that only a holiday in rural Tuscany can provide.
Completed at your own pace
We love when guests share what they worked on PW (Post-Watermill). Recently, knitting-returnees shared with us their finished creations from their week last year with ‘Architecutural Design’ queen, Georgia Farrell. We love seeing how ideas are brought to life in colourful and dynamic ways – even better that they can be flaunted when you’re out and about. Because what’s the best part about “finishing the hat”? Well, that you get to wear it afterwards, of course!
Want to create your own version? Georgia Farrell returns to the Watermill in 2027 with a course that guides you through colour theory and architecturally- inspired designs.
