NEWSLETTER ISSUE 92 / February 2018

Dear Friend,

Students at the watermill in Tuscany

I don’t know what the weather has been like with you recently, but the end of January here in Tuscany was mild, almost Spring-like. Bill’s been walking about without an overcoat, receiving strange looks from Italians, who dress according to the date, not the temperature, and are still wrapped up like Arctic explorers, with quilted coats and, if you’ll forgive a spreading of the simile geographically, with scarves like boa constrictors, endlessly coiled about their necks.

Come May, when even the Italians will have removed at least a layer, we can promise you sunshine during our creative courses. And if it does rain, you’ll have the personal services of an Umbrella Man (see story below) to ensure that raindrops don’t keep falling on your head.

In this month’s newsletter there are also stories on:

  • A phabulous Watermill photographic competition, with a phantastic phirst prize
  • An outstanding new yoga course: ‘Connection – to yourself, to others and to nature’
  • The opening-up of another week of another week for Jo Parfitt’s Writing your Life Stories course
  • Why you can throw yourself like a fish into our Italian language courses, confident that we know our chickens.

We’d love to welcome you here this year for one of our sun-filled, fun-filled, inspiring courses and there are more details below about all of them. Booking are continuing to flow in, many from people who have been with us before and want to come again (thank you, thank you). We already have nearly 200 firm bookings for 2018, which means we only have 40/50 places left.

If you’ve a favourite tutor, a specific week, or a special bedroom that you like, please get in touch as soon as you can, and we’ll set aside a place for you. Just click here, select the type of course you are interested in (painting, knitting, writing, yoga and or language), find out more about your tutor, then go to the Booking Enquiry form, fill in as appropriate and send it to us.

The two pictures above show some of guests enjoying painting in the walled garden, while below are knitters in the sitting room and writers under the vine verandah.

Bring a partner: there’s plenty for them to do

Why not bring your friend or partner? They don’t have to participate in the course, but they will be able to enjoy the wonderful hospitality of the mill and, whenever they want, to come out with you to our beautiful locations. We also offer a range of Alternative activities for partners on all our 2018 courses, as well as a generous £GBP 250 discount if they share a room with you.

A phabulous Watermill photographic competition, with a phantastic phirst prize!

watermill competition pictures

Many of our guests arriving at The Watermill say: “It’s so beautiful and peaceful here. The photographs just don’t do it justice!”

Yes, it is difficult to portray the unique ambiance and fun-filled atmosphere of The Watermill during our inspiring creative courses, whether its painting, creative writing, knitting, Italian language or yoga.

So, we thought, who better to capture the spirit of The Watermill than our guests, and we also thought, why not encourage them to do so by inaugurating an annual Watermill Photographic Competition? And why not have a cracking First Prize of a week’s free holiday at The Watermill on one of our week-long creative courses?

And we’ve done just that with a competition that is open to all our guests coming on creative courses in 2018*.

It’s simple really: first prize goes to the photograph we judge to be the one that most reflects the ambiance of the mill. We are particularly interested in shots that show our ‘students’ in action, both at ‘work’ and play, although we’d also like to see great photos of the Watermill, its grounds and the surrounding countryside, and of the flora and fauna that abound in this environmentally protected area.

Watermill competition pictures

The winner will be offered a free week-long creative holiday at the Watermill in 2019, of his or her choice, subject to availability. There will be five runners-up prizes, of £GBP 200 off a creative holiday at The Watermill in 2019, subject to availability (and not in conjunction with any other offer).

  • The competition is open to anyone who has stayed at the Watermill, this year (or *in previous years)
  • The competition is not open to professional photographers
  • The closing date is 31 October 2018
  • The winners will be notified in the first week of January 2019
  • The judges will be Lois and Bill Breckon, Maggie Renner Hellman, Sandra Strohschein, Mike Willdridge and Tim Wilmot
  • The judges’ decision is final If other people are in the picture, the entrant should have asked their permission to photograph them
  • The Watermill reserves the right to use any of these pictures, with due acknowledgment, for publicity purposes.
  • To enter you can submit up to five photographs. They should be sent electronically as high-resolution JPG files, with a minimum size of 1 mb.You should send your pictures to Bill Breckon via WeTransfer. An outstanding new yoga course: Connection – to yourself, to others, and to nature

Yoga retreats at the watermill in Tuscany

We are delighted to welcome two amazing young American yoga teachers to the Watermill this Summer,Amy Rogg and Joanne Brohmer.

With their students using words like ‘joy’ and ‘magical’ about them, Amy and Joanne will help you to awaken and restore your true passion and self-worth. We are sure this is going to be one of our most inspiring retreats –a sun-filled, fun-filled week where we’ll nurture your mind, body and spirit.

Amy and Joanne’s week will run from Saturday 25 August to Saturday 1 September 2018. The theme of the retreat will be ‘Connection’ – to yourself, to others and to nature.

Amy Rogg

Amy Rogg is a yoga teacher and movement facilitator working on transforming the human spirit through holistic arts. She is based in San Francisco, California, USA.

Amy helps people to awaken and restore their passion and self-worth, inspiring them to move towards their vulnerability and authenticity.

She brings people back into their innate knowledge and wisdom, through a deeper connection to their body, breath, and personal expression.

Joanne Brohmer

As a healer, Joanne Brohmer offers a range of modalities that helps others enter into their own depth and set their anchor deeper, where they can begin to claim and feel what has been hard to reach. She helps bring what has been blocked forward into the safe home of acceptance and embrace. She facilitates bringing others to that soft, open, vulnerable place in a way that feels safe.

Participants on our yoga retreat with Amy and Joanne enjoy SEVEN nights at the Watermill, with full board. Everything is included in the cost of the retreat: workshops, accommodation (including all linen and towels), tours, pre-dinner aperitifs, all meals and wines (including outings to charming local restaurants) and all local transportation (including transfers to Pisa airport and an excursion by train to Lucca). You get to Pisa, Italy, we do the rest! You can see a draft itinerary by clicking here.

Come and practise your yoga and meditation in the tranquil heart of rural Tuscany and let us nurture your mind, body and spirit.

Umbrellas delivered to your door

When we announced the Watermill Photographic competition, one of our previous guests, Lani Chaves, quickly sent in her five entries, the first we have received. She also sent me the photograph above. As I said, it won’t rain much in your week (we hope), but if it does you’ll have Umbrella Man (Bill) setting out to help. Lani says: “This is not for the photo competition, but here is one of you kindly delivering umbrellas to each room one rainy morning. So symbolic of the amazing care you take toward all your guests!”

Watermill in Tuscany's Painting NewsPAINTING NEWS

Seductively simple images from Andrew Geeson

Paintings by Andrew Geeson

We love the simplicity of these beguiling images from Watermill watercolour tutor Andrew Geeson and we can’t wait to see him in action for his first-ever course here in June.

Painting by Andrew Geeson

And it is not just fruit and flowers that Andrew captures seductively simply. Landscapes and buildings, too:

We are looking forward to watching Andrew work around the Watermill and in our lovely Tuscan countryside when he visits us this Summer. He will be with us from Saturday 23 to Saturday 30 June 2018. There’s a link to more details about his course below.

Andrew Geeson

Andrew Geeson, from Leicester in the UK, has been a professional watercolourist for more than 20 years. He has taught hundreds of students on holidays and in workshops and, increasingly, on-line were he enjoys a large following.

He says:“I love the simplicity and joy of watercolours and my passion and aim is to inspire and encourage students to paint in a loose a free manner. The joy it brings is unmatched and everyone should try it. I am keen to share my excitement with others.”As one of his students says:“Superb work. Beautiful loose style, this is how watercolours should be!”

Painting by Andrew Geeson

Andrew specialises in a wet-into-wet style of watercolours:

“This quick, fun and rewarding approach to watercolour painting allows you to capture your subject, whatever it may be, in the most atmospheric way without the constraints of over detailing. Being spontaneous, immediate and atmospheric, it allows you to express more than the subject of the painting Come along and give it a try. I think you may find a new world of painting.”

It’s not fair! I’m not going on a Watermill knitting course

Alison Becketts knitting partner

I’ve always liked this picture of our friend Alison Beckett’s dog, Tia, (left) looking forlorn when she’s been told she can’t go on one of our world-famous knitting courses! As you can see from the picture on the right, her stitching is meticulous.

But you can come, if you hurry and grab the last few places left on our three Knitting and La Bella Vita week-long holidays this year. Details of availability below.

Talking of knitting, what do you think of yarn bombing? On a snowy day just before Christmas we visited the tiny republic of San Marino, an independent enclave surrounded by Italy, and Lois took this great night-time shot (left) of a yard-bombed tree.

I am thinking those dolphins in Fivizzano’s Piazza Medicea, (right) might look good with woolly coats. Anybody fancy a yarn bomb? I’ll tell the mayor!

By popular demand: a second edition of Jo’s Writing your Life Stories course

London Times article for Jo Parfitt

Following the article above in the LondonTimes newspaper, we have had a surge of enquiries forJo Parfitt’s Writing your Life Stories week at the Watermill in September -- and it is now completely full.

So, ‘by popular demand’, we’ve opened a second week here for Jo. Her new Write Your Life Stories week will run from Saturday 18 August to Saturday 25 August 2018.

We’ve been told that this is an ideal time for many people, such as those who work in schools and universities, who can only take time off in the academic holidays and, of course, anyone who wants to come is welcome. You won’t regret it! As one student on Jo’s last course here said: “I can honestly say it’s been life changing for me and the setting could not have been more perfect.”

We already have four bookings for this new, extra week, so if you would like to join us, please let us know as soon as you can, and we’ll make sure you have a place reserved.

Jo’s Write Your Life Story creative writing courses are designed to help you produce your best work, to find your true writer’s ‘voice’ and to write authentically. Among other things, you’ll discover the secret of SPICE, the seven steps to writing life stories, and put this into practice right away. To re-cap, the new course will run from 18 to 25 August 2018.

Jo Parfitt

Jo Parfitt has published 31 books herself, has helped more than 100 authors get into print and more than 1,000 people to begin writing. She’s an inspiring, compassionate and encouraging teacher: her motto is ‘sharing what I know to help others to grow’.

Jo says :“The course at the watermill will provide a safe haven in which to unlock your creativity, write from your heart and hone your writing craft. It will also help to remove blocks to your writing. Sessions at the mill will empower students to write in a compelling way that makes real experiences come to life.”

Jo adds: “The class will include several methods and genre and is perfect for anyone wanting to write about their own lives for an effective journal, memoir or blog. If you would enjoy an injection of inspiration in a safe and supportive environment this course is for you. It is appropriate for students of any level."

ITALIAN LANGUAGE NEWS

Fishy thoughts for our Italian language course

buttarsi come un pesce

We told you in our last newsletter how, in the chilly weather, Italians recommend that we vestirci a cipolla, dress like an onion, wear lots of layers. Quite right too.

But did you know that if you want to learn this beautiful language you should throw yourself like a fish? Yes, 'buttarsi come un pesce’, means to leap enthusiastically into an activity, just like these salmon on the right. Leap into one of our Italian language courses* and you’ll soon be taking in the language like a fish to water -- and enjoying la bella vita Italiana.

Not only that, we’ll treat you like ‘un pesce grosso’, a big fish, or a big shot, to us English and Americans. And we promise never to trattare a pesci in faccia, literally to treat someone with fishes in the face, to show disrespect.

I know what I am tallking about

Yes, we really know our onions when it comes to teaching Italian, or, as our Italian tutor Giulia Balestri would say: "Conosco i miei polli, I know what I’m talking about". You’ll learn all about fish, onions, chickens and much, more on our week-long course, not only from Julia, but from all the other Italians you’ll meet.

We’ve teamed up again with the prestigious Florence language school, Langues Services, to design a week in which people can learn Italian in the most natural and enjoyable way ever. There will not only be formal lessons under the vine verandah (some 20 hours in the week), but we’ll also be making trips and excursions to enjoy the natural beauty of Lunigiana, the area surrounding the mill, to explore its history and culture, to sample its traditional foods – and above all, to meet the people, speaking Italian, practising what you’ve learned.

Eating outside in Tuscany

A couple of comments from last year’s language course:

“We would like you to know how much we appreciated our stay with you at Posara. As hosts, you made us feel most welcome; and the combination of language lessons, food and excursions was excellently balanced. We were unaware of the Apuan mountain region – it is spectacularly beautiful. Altogether a unique and delightful experience. With fond memories of your lovely home and very personal hospitality.”

“What an amazing week. Thank you, Bill, Lois and your excellent team. Giulia was great, and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip. Can’t wait to do it all again....”

At the moment, the language week Saturday 30 June to Saturday 7 July 2018 is almost fully booked, but we are thinking of opening up a second course in the week after, from Saturday 7 July to Saturday 14 July 2018, sharing the week with Terry Jarvis’ painting course. If you like the idea of that, let us know and we’ll open up a list of potential students.

Yoga News at the watermill in ItalyYOGA NEWS

Welcome to the new yoga teachers: Amy and Joanne

Yoga retreat at the watermill in Italy

As we said at the beginning of this newsletter, we are delighted to welcome Amy Rogg and Joanne Brohmer, two amazing young American yoga teachers, to the Watermill in the late Summer.Their retreat ‘Connection’ – to yourself, to others and to nature looks like being magical and joyful. It will run from Saturday 25 August to Saturday 1 September 2018.

Here are some comments about Amy and Joanne from previous students.

For Amy:

You'll have no choice but to laugh with Amy. It's unavoidable. Playfulness is her tool for mental hygiene. "What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul." Get ready for some deep cleaning.- LJ Mountain View, California, USA

Amy is pure joy! In all of her classes, Amy fosters an environment that invites students to play, learn, and grow. Because of her infectious and authentic warmth, our students enthusiastically showed up for any and everything Amy offered. Anyone who has the opportunity to experience Amy’s yogic laughter and grace will strive to become a better version of themselves.- EG Redwood City, California, USA

Amy Rogg was my yoga teacher for about two years. She always had a wonderful, welcoming way with all of her students and a creative interpretation of doing the yoga practice. Her creativity and thinking out of the box are appreciated in a place where people really don't have the guts to step outside the box. Amy does. And she is an inspiration. We are lucky to have Amy.- SB Portland, Oregon, USA

And for Joanne:

With strength of presence in love and obvious intuitive sensitivity, Joanne skilfully directed energy and held a space of safety which allowed me to release and heal. After the session I felt much clearer and lighter. Truly a gift."- Jacqueline, counsellor

"Joanne has such a calming, nurturing way in working with people. She radiates and channels so much love and safety in all the sessions I've had with her. I just feel like she holds me even if I'm going through something difficult. She has keen awareness of the physical and energetic body and uses intuition as a guide by blending the two to create a more integrated experience -- she knows exactly what I need and I don't have to say anything a lot of the time.. She's really something special."- yoga student/Samyama Yoga Center

" I have known Joanne for years. She has been my personal Reiki therapist. Ever since the first time that I met her and she gave me a treatment, I have always felt in safe, competent hands. She is a natural, intuitive healer; she is able to create and hold safe space so that my natural healing can occur. She is extremely sensitive and caring, warm and kind." - Peg Krome, Grief Counselor
