Pastels
Carolyn was a secondary teacher for 30 years before becoming more involved in the art world. She says:
“When I started painting, I very quickly realised that soft pastels was the artform which excited me – I love the immediacy of the medium, the vibrancy and ability to combine with other media.”
She is an experienced animal portrait artist, receiving commissions from all over the country, but mainly she loves to paint landscapes, especially en plein air.
“I love to travel and have taken my pastels to Australia, India and more recently Indonesia, where I stayed for two months, painting and learning Balinese art techniques.”
As an experienced teacher, demonstrator and tutor, she enjoys sharing her passion for pastels and will personalise her teaching, whether students are novices or more experienced painters.
“My main aim as a teacher is to inspire, encourage and guide in a friendly way, so students can all develop their skills and produce work they are proud of!”
In this course, Carolyn will demonstrate various techniques of using pastels, the different types of pastels and surfaces, mark making and blending. With her, students will explore underpainting techniques, using either watercolour or alcohol washes and the challenges facing painting outside with pastels! In such a stunning Tuscan environment, where there is a prospective painting around every corner, there will be plenty of plein air painting, with the aim of producing sketches and pastel studies to inform studio-based work.
