Painting by watermill tutor Carl March

Hotel Garden

Watercolour. 34cm x 59cm

Inspired by the gardens at the Azia Resort and Spa in Pafos, Cyprus. Showing garden entrance with tall palms, cactus and banana plants. Loose 'wet on wet' technique worked well, tried to avoid any corrections the following day, it is so tempting to fiddle and over-work.

Arch at the Cove

Watercolour with pen and ink. 22cm x 29cm

Attracted to view of the archway and with colourful bougainvillea and tall palms. Painted outdoors in Dubai, extremely hot weather proved problematic with washes drying very quickly. Additional black ink helps to define details and add character.

Garden on the coastal walk

Pencil and watercolour. 20m x 28cm

Painted on a recent holiday to Muscat, Oman. Attracted to the view of the garden with the tall palms and distant coast line. Made several pencil sketches before adding the coloured washes.

Sarah's Lilies

Watercolour sketch. 25cm x 24 cm

Inspired by the beautiful shapes and colours of these elegant flowers. Employed a simple 'brush drawing' approach to capture spontaneity and avoid over working. Very pleased with finished study.

Profile

Drawing and watercolours en plein air

Carl March, an English painter and printmaker, has studied in Milan and lived until recently in Dubai: a truly international artist! Drawing and design are his passions and he likes to experiment with various drawing mediums, combining them with traditional watercolour painting processes to create distinctively subtle works.

Before arriving in Dubai, he was a regular exhibitor in the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibitions and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London. His work is represented in many private collections. This also includes many commissions one of which was presented to HRH Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace.

Carl’s teaching philosophy

Carl is also a great teacher. He says: “I love the genuine satisfaction in passing on my knowledge to others.”

His teaching activities began in the early 1990s after a chance meeting with the Head of the local Adult Education Centre, who purchased some of my work: “She asked if I would be interested in starting a weekly Drawing and Painting class and apprehensively, I agreed to the idea. The class was called “’Drawing and Painting for Pleasure’ and offered regular exercises and demonstrations in traditional watercolour techniques. The class proved popular and with the completion of a City and Guilds Teaching Certificate in Adult Learning, my teaching slots increased to approximately twelve hours a week."

Carl adds: “As with many unplanned events in my life, teaching has turned out to be a fortunate and rewarding experience and something I am still benefitting from to this day."

“Something I did not foresee, was the personal reward and genuine satisfaction involved with passing on my knowledge to others. For example, demonstrating and explaining “how to do” a particular exercise, then witnessing a group of students repeat the exercise for themselves to achieve their goals. Suddenly ‘the penny drops’ and it all makes sense: this surely must be the “real” reward for any teacher.”

Praise from some of Carl’s previous students

“Carl has a gentle but effective way of teaching and we have learnt a lot from him. Most importantly, however, under his guidance the class always becomes a very sociable and happy group. Quite simply, his classes are not only well planned and informative but also great fun.” HM

"I hadn't painted much or regularly for many years so a week's residential was slightly daunting. I need not have worried. Carl's lessons were well planned and his explanations and demonstrations of techniques were clear. He was encouraging and always found something to praise as well as suggesting ways of improving the painting. The week was great fun, relaxed and I came home with paintings fit to frame and hang on the wall. I enjoyed it so much that I promptly booked another week. It was every bit as good as the first and my work has continued to improve." MC

My friends and I participated in a week's art programme for beginners. My friends and I had an exceptionally enjoyable time. The programme was varied and well executed, Carl is a natural and excellent tutor, never short of encouraging words and support.
Not having a natural talent for drawing and painting, I was a little apprehensive about attending, my doubts were soon expelled and fears allayed. We look forward to participating in future courses of this nature.

“When I went on my first painting holiday with Carl I had never picked up a paintbrush other than to paint a ceiling. But within a day I had produced my first ever watercolour and the result was beyond my wildest dreams. Since then I have spent two further holidays under Carl’s tutelage, each time learning new skills as well as refreshing my knowledge of basic techniques. Thanks to Carl’s endless patience and encouragement I have become an enthusiastic watercolour painter and look forward to further enjoyable holidays led by this inspirational teacher.” HA
