One of the lesser-known, but annually impressive, sights of Florence is the Iris Garden, next to the Piazzale Michelangelo. Here are displayed an immense variety of different coloured irises, the symbol of the city. My friend Pasquale and I visited last week to see the show and watch the people, particularly the crocodiles of bright-eyed schoolkids looking at the wonderful blooms.
The garden is open for only a few weeks at the height of the iris blooming season (this year from 25 April to 20 May.) It was created in 1954 to host an annual competition for the best varieties of Iris, but today today the gardens are managed by the Italian Iris Society, dedicated to protecting the species. It’s well worth a visit
The trouble with irises is that the blooms don’t last that long.. We had a great show at the Watermill, heralding the spring.
Now is is the turn of the rose pergola inthe walled garden to show that summer is on the way…
.We are working hard to try to provide colour in our garden all the time. Come and sample the delights yourself and a renowned Watermill creative week, painting, knitting, creative writing and Italian language. Please click here to learn more.
