This picture by Grahame Booth, which I posted a few days ago on the Watermill Facebook page, attracted more than 1000 Likes. 1306, to be precise.
Pictures of paintings by our inspiring Watermill tutors often produce more than 1000 Likes, but I think 1306 is probably a recent record.
Grahame’s deceptively simple painting, of a man working away in his garden is one of my favourite paintings of his, and I thought it might be interesting to see what you feel about another favourite too. So today I’m going to use the picture below on the Watermill Facebook page and see what reaction we get. Will you like as much as the man in his garden?
I posted the pictures to promote Grahame’s 2021 painting course, on which we still have a few places and to which we would love to welcome you. Then you can watch the maestro in action and paint along with him. I’m sure you would Like that too.
Grahame Booth, one of the Watermill’s new, inspiring tutors, only started to paint in his early 30s (some 30 years ago), and because he clearly remembers the problems of frustrations of learning to master watercolours he is a particularly sympathetic tutor. His simple tips above will help you to become a much better painter, as will his week-long course here this October.
Grahame paints only in watercolour, and his success is reflected in the numerous awards he has won many years as well as his highly popular YouTube channel. We are delighted to welcome him to the Watermill painting tutors team. His course will run from Saturday 23 October to Saturday 30 October 2021.
Grahame’s painting above is called Market Day and shows how you can successfully paint crowds by painting a fewpeople with reasonable accuracy and just suggesting the rest. You will be able to try the techniques yourself when we go on Tuesdays to our nearby walled mediaeval town of Fivizzano to enjoy, and sketch, the weekly market there.
Here’s another lovely Grahame watercolour, this time of a courtyard in the French town of Lumieres:
Grahame believes that plein air painting is the to success in this beautiful medium and he will show how to use a logical approach to translate the landscape into watercolours full of light, excitement and impact. One previous student said: “Grahame can both paint and teach. He can manage a group of all levels and everyone learns and improves. Most importantly it’s always fun.â€
