The unspoiled rural Tuscan countryside of Lunigiana which surrounds the Watermill enables us to feel ‘far from the madding crowd,’ removed from the hustle and bustle of the hordes that congest Italy’s tourist hotspots. We are, however, secluded, not isolated, and the historic Italian cities like Florence, Venice or Rome are easily and swiftly accessible.
If you want to talk about isolation, consider Norfolk Island in the middle of Pacific Ocean, the best part of 900 miles to the east of Australia. That’s what I call remote! It also one of the venues enjoyed by our Watermill tutor Belinda Biggs, who takes painting groups there. The charming pen and wash picture above was made on a recent trip. We are looking forward immensely to seeing what she makes of our Tuscan countryside.
On her course here this summer, Belinda will help you to paint in a laid-back style that reflects the peace and tranquillity of Posara and rural Tuscany. Your pictures, using pen and wash, watercolour, and coloured pencils, will bring many happy memories of your stay long after your week’s painting holiday with Belinda is ended.
Here’s another example of Belinda’s laid-back work, this time a pen and wash study of some flower-bedecked steps in Umbria, Italy.

On Belinda’s Watermill week, as well as painting our unspoilt countryside (we are in a National Park) you will also be visiting a mediaeval castle, a tranquil 17th-century monastery and a thousand-year-old hilltop village, with the towering mountains of the Apuan Alps behind.

Belinda will be with us for a week from Saturday 8 July until Saturday 15 July 2023. A comment from one of her previous students: “I find Belinda to be an excellent teacher who is very generous in sharing her wealth of expertise. She is always kind, patient and encouraging. I am blessed to spend time with her and continue to be inspired by her incredible works.”
***Don’t forget you will be Cool and Green at the Watermill: all our public rooms (including the studio) and all our bedrooms are air-conditioned, powered by our hidden array of photovoltaic panels which make us self-sufficient in electricity.
