Watermill knitting tutor Georgia Farrell says she likes nothing better than walking the city streets to inspire her designs. Her hero is the architect Le Corbusier, who was quoted as saying; “You employ stone, wood and concrete, and with these materials you build houses and palaces. That is construction. Ingenuity is at work. But suddenly you touch my heart, you do me good, I am happy and I say: This is beautiful. That is Architecture. Art enters in.â€
Georgia says: “This sentiment has really impacted my own practice as I strive to use the basic materials of my own craft as an architect of knits and purls.†She says: “I love nothing more than creating geometric patterns out of stocking stitch and reverse stocking stitch, it’s like drawing with light and shade.â€
We can’t promise you any concrete and steel skyscrapers in this beautiful part of rural Tuscany, but we hope that you and Georgia will be inspired by mediaeval castles, tranquil convents and ancient villages slumbering in the sun.
Georgia will be with us for two individual weeks at the end of April and beginning of May: we still have a few spaces on her first week, from Saturday 29 April to Saturday 6 May and, due to a cancellation, the Lippi suite is free for her second week from Saturday 6 May to Saturday 13 May. Book now and enjoy inspiring tuition, warm hospitality, stunning scenery, delicious food and wine – and, of course, the convivial company of fellow knitters.
Georgia Farrell is a British designer with a passion for creating architecturally inspired design for hand knitting and beyond. She loves to share the stories and concepts behind each of her designs. With a background in textiles, Georgia skilfully translates her passion for architectural details into textured knitted fabrics. From there she crafts and builds collections of accessories, garments and homewares, to be knitted, worn and enjoyed.
For each of her weeks at the Watermill, Georgia has created a sampler style project to take you through some of the different techniques and stitches she uses to create her architecturally inspired textured patterns, giving you a real insight into the way she works. You will also spend creative time with architectural inspiration and collage, before translating your creations into knitting, by combining colour and texture.
