Dear Friend,

Newsletter at the Watermill in Tuscany, Italy

Our surprising saxophonists play one of the most sublime pieces of Italian music.

You can expect the unexpected almost every day during a Watermill creative course. Whether it is freshly made hors d'oeuvres from one of our cooks (like Parmesan lollipops or puff pastry anchovy twists) to tempt your palette at aperitivi time, young Harry playing the Spanish guitar beneath the rose pergola, or a surprise ‘happening’ like the sudden appearance of eight saxophonists coming together from garden, terrace and balcony to amaze and entertain us. (Click here to see more.) That’s them above playing Piero Mascagni’s sublime Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana.

You’ll always be Cool (and Green) at the Watermill, whatever the weather

Cool and Green at the Watermill

Warm hospitality, cool rooms via solar-powered electricity: it’s all part of the plan to make the Watermill Green. In the last four years our hidden array of photovoltaic panels has produced more than 60 megawatt hours (MWh = 60,000 KwH, kilowatt hours) of electricity from the sun and saved the emission of 43 tonnes of carbon dioxide from conventional power stations. It may not be much in the grand scheme of things but, as they say, every little helps, and it means, as you will see below, our guests are Cool and Green when they stay with us.

The pictures show a ‘snapshot’ of our production of electricity from the sun, taken on the morning of 21 August 2023, a close-up of our electricity production and the carbon dioxide saving, and a drone shot of our ‘hidden’ array of photovoltaic panels.

You will have to search hard to see our photovoltaic panels, which are on the south-facing roofs of the 19th century mill and on the studio, looking out towards the river. You can really only see them from the air. These panels, which we installed in 2019, make us more than self-sufficient in electricity production. (In fact, we sell the surplus we produce to the Italian national grid.)

This solar electricity not only supplies our everyday needs, but also powers our extensive air-conditioning system, so apart from regular maintenance, it effectively costs nothing to run. There are air-conditioning units in all our bedrooms and public rooms, including the communal dining room, sitting room and the studio, all run with solar-powered electricity, which is why we say you will be Cool and Green!

You can learn about our other Cool and Green (and Cool and Silvery-blue) projects by clicking here.

Still a place or two left on our 2023 creative courses

The latest availability for this year is shown below. (If a week you particularly fancy is currently fully booked: there are often cancellations and if you get in touch via the Watermill's Contact Form, we will put you on the waiting list.)

Here's our current availability for 2023:

  • Painting with Charles Sluga, watercolours, 23 September to 30 September 2023 (Ghiberti bedroom)

But now it's really time to reserve your place on a 2024 Watermill creative course.....it may still be a long way off but, to be really sure of your space, it is sensible to book now. And just think how much warm anticipation you can enjoy, looking forward to the convivial symbiosis between fellow students, inspiring tutors and the Watermill's caring team.

Watermill in Tuscany's Painting NewsPAINTING NEWS

Two exciting new Watermill painting tutors: Yong Chen and Michael Solovyev

We have half a dozen or so new creative course tutors next year and will be introducing them to you in our newsletters, blogs and social media posts. First, demonstrating the truly international flavour of Watermill painting courses, Yong Chen and Michael Solovyev.

Paintings by Yong Chen
Colourful blooms in Yong’s flower garden and an atmospheric snowy evening scene

Yong Chen

Yong Chen is a painting professor from Boston, Massachusetts, USA, and an accomplished painter, author and illustrator. He has been passionate about art and teaching since his childhood

His paintings have been exhibited in art galleries and museums in both China and the United States.

Yong will teach and demonstrate mainly in watercolours, but he also excels in Chinese traditional painting, acrylic, gouache, oil and digital art, and is happy to teach in these mediums, too. He has a step-by-step, systematic approach, whilst bringing out creativity and making the process simpler and more relaxing.

One of his students said: “Yong is not only an amazing artist, but also a caring, devoted, excellent instructor and a kind person with a wonderful sense of humour. Yong provides a safe, happy, supportive environment where you can laugh and learn continuing on your personal journey in art.”

Yong’s painting week is from Saturday 6 July to Saturday 13 July 2024. There are links to his Tutor Profile below.

Paintings by Michael Solovyev Michael Solovyev

Michael Solovyev is often called a ‘sunny watercolourist’ – his airy, transparent artworks look as though they emit the sunlight. His traditional academic art education, extensive experience as a head theatre/stage designer and his oil painting career, all helped define his priority as a watercolour artist – light. Internationally renowned, he has had exhibitions and tutored workshops all over the world.

In this course, you will learn how to create atmospheric landscapes by manipulating tonal values, colour, and edge. Michael will show how to paint a luminous landscape and how to add emotions to artwork. He will share personal secrets and techniques that allow you to create an impressive emotional watercolor in a few simple steps.

A comment from one of Michael’s students: “I really appreciate that you are so willing to share what you know and give us so many helpful hints. I can tell that teaching gives you great joy.”

Michael’s painting week is from Saturday 22 June to Saturday 29 June 2024. There are links to his Tutor Profile below.

Watermill in Italy's Knitting NewsKNITTING NEWS

Looking forward to knitting in 2024

Some of our knitting guests on Georgia Farrell’s course earlier this year showing off some of their week’s work as the shadows lengthened in the walled garden

Introducing two stylish new knitting tutors in 2024: Sylvia Watts-Cherry and Susan Crawford

Next year, as well as old favourites Norah Gaughan, Louisa Harding and Debbie Abrahams, we have two new knitting tutors with very different styles: Sylvia Watts-Cherry and Susan Crawford.

Knitting by Sylvia Watts-Cherry
Sylvia Watts-Cherry: dynamic designs and bright colours

Sylvia Watts-Cherry

Sylvia Watts-Cherry is a British designer who uses bold patterns and striking colours. She loves cables and intarsia colourwork. Her identity is important to her, and she likes to draw influence from her African heritage and Scottish upbringing in her designs. As well as self-publishing patterns, Sylvia has patterns published in Vogue Knitting Magazine, Laine Magazine, and many other publications.

For her week at the Watermill, Sylvia has created a project to explore some of the different techniques and stitches in intarsia. You will also spend time ‘getting creative,’ using inspirations from the Watermill and surroundings to create your own unique project.

A comment from a previous student: “A thoughtful and thorough instructor, generous and patient with students at every level. I appreciate her warmth and humour; her practical approach makes even the most complex knitting techniques accessible. I leave her workshops challenged and inspired:”

Sylvia will be with us from Saturday 1 June to Saturday 8 June 2024. There are links to her Tutor Profile below.

Knitting by Susan Crawford at the Watermill in Tuscany
Susan Crawford: a love of colour

Susan Crawford

Susan Crawford is a knitwear designer, author, fashion historian and entrepreneur – running her own business, creating and manufacturing yarn and publishing her well-known book titles including A Stitch in Time, Evolution and The Vintage Shetland Project, cherished by knitters worldwide. Her yarns are spun locally from British-bred sheep. Susan is particularly celebrated for her Fair Isle designs and her love of colour.

She has combined these twin passions for the special project for you to knit during her your week here: a beautiful colour-work cowl, inspired by the Tuscan countryside surrounding the Watermill.

Susan will be with us from Saturday 27 April to Saturday 4 May 2024. There are links to her Tutor Profile below.

ITALIAN LANGUAGE NEWS

Come and join our unique Italian Language course

This really is a ‘course with a difference’. Not only are there formal lessons on the vine verandah (some 20 hours in the week), but we also make trips and excursions to savour the natural beauty of Lunigiana, the area around the mill, to explore its history and culture, to sample its traditional foods – and above all, to meet the people, speak Italian, and practise what you’ve learned.

The Watermill has teamed up again with tutor Giulia Balestri for a week in which people can learn Italian in the most natural and enjoyable way. Your immersion into the language and culture of real Italians will be customised for you, to suit your curiosity and your interests, helping you to treasure everything you learn and make it a seamless part of who you are.

Here are comments from previous participants:

"A super language week: well organised giving us a taste of the ‘real Italy.’ Despite the disparity in ability our tutor managed to help all of us towards a better understanding and production of the Italian language. The lessons were fun, interactive and helped me enormously. For a teacher to be ‘on duty’ from 8.30am until bedtime - teaching us in each situation - must have been exhausting yet she kept her sense of fun throughout. The accommodation was great and the camaraderie which evolved was, I'm sure, due to your relaxed and welcoming approach to your guests."

"I had a wonderful time on the language course and laughed so much! Our tutor was fantastic and designed a course that we could all follow at our own level, complete beginners to slightly more than complete beginners. There was lots of role play and games in Italian, like "Who am I?" and "Battleships". We had plenty of opportunity to talk to local Italians in cafes and the market in Fivizzano. We learned how to buy things in the market, order food and drink and ask directions. I feel confident to travel round Italy and know that I could find accommodation, buy food, drink and other items, travel on trains or hire bikes. My confidence and knowledge has improved immensely over the week and our tutor has even sent us exercises to do at home to keep our learning going. She was tireless and gave us so much."

Next year’s course will be from Saturday 12 October to Saturday 19 October 2024.
