NEWSLETTER ISSUE 110 / August 2019

Dear Friend,

Nature at the watermill in Tuscany

The pictures above and below this introductory section of the summer newsletter give you a brief glimpse of the teeming wildlife around the Watermill. They were taken by Trevor Sanderson, who joined his wife Maggie as a ‘non-participating partner’ on Jo Parfitt’s recent Writing Your Life Stories week.

At the very top of the millstream, where the water is diverted from the river Rosaro, Trevor disturbed a duck and her offspring. He says: “At this point the stream narrows and the flow is so strong that the ducklings can only just paddle their way upstream away from you.”

Waterboatman

Rather more prosaic, but fascinating, are the water boatman insects that gather just below the arch that controls the height of the millstream water.

Using the effects of surface tension, they can skim across the top of the water, feeding on algae and dead plant material as they drift past. Clever stuff, but a rather boring existence.

Trevor has also made some marvellous photographs of the other wildlife along the millstream, including bees, damselflies and lizards (see above and below). We also made a slideshow for Facebook which you can see by clicking here.

Taking pictures of the beautiful surroundings and the abounding wildlife is just one of the activities in which non-participating partners can indulge. You can find out more by clicking here.

Our 2019 creative courses are now more or less full, but we are now taking bookings for our 2020 courses. In fact, more than 60 people have already signed up for next year! You can learn more by clicking here.

Put yourself and your pictures in the picture on a Watermill painting course

Painting exhibition at the watermill in Tuscany

Here’s an animated picture of our Friday informal exhibition in the Watermill studio at the end of Mike Willdridge’s painting week at the Watermill. From left to right, Jonathan Sanders, Anastasia Roberts and Lesley Dench enjoy looking at some of the artwork. Our thanks to Janet Grech-Cini for the picture. Why don’t you join us and put yourself, and your pictures, in the picture?

A cat gazes at heaven

This picture of a cat sitting in front of the fish stall at the weekly market in nearby Fivizzano was taken by our friend Jamie Martin. You don’t have to be an animal psychologist know exactly what’s going through that feline mind!

Our guests on our creative courses make a foray to the market every Tuesday, to sample the true sights and sounds of Italian life and perhaps to buy some porcini mushrooms and fresh local cheeses before enjoying a panino or a scoop or two of home-made ice cream in the gelateria on the square.

A door to paradise? Coming into the new Ghiberti bedroom

The Ghiberti room at the watermill, Italy

Talking of paradise: As part of our efforts constantly to improve our offering at the Watermill, we are slowly working on re-styling our bedrooms, to give each of them a distinctive motif and ambiance.

Making new friends at the watermill in Tuscany
Pictures: Francesco Lastrucci

Here are some pictures of the newly redecorated bedroom, named after the great Renaissance artist Lorenzo Ghiberti, creator of the amazing bronze doors of the Florence baptistry, which Michelangelo described as ‘the Gates of Paradise.’ The 'spring-green'-coloured walls are surmounted by a frieze with flowing rose stems and flowers, painted by Lois and our friend Vivienne White.

Why not come and see for yourself? For a preview of next year’s courses and the link for you to enquire about availability and/or reserve your place, please click here.
