Come to the watermill in Tuscany with your partner or friend
Our encounter has been too brief:
Let's go to the Watermill for a week!

Bring a partner: there’s plenty for them to do

Why not bring your friend or partner? They don’t have to participate in the course, but they will be able to enjoy the wonderful hospitality of the mill and, whenever they want, to come out with you to our beautiful locations. We also offer a range of Alternative activities for partners on all our courses, as well as a generous £GBP 250 discount if they share a room with you.

Some photos that may make you laugh

One of the characteristics of a Watermill holiday, as well as the warm hospitality, inspiring tutors, delicious food and beautiful surroundings, is the camaraderie and fun enjoyed by our guests. Here are a few photographs which try to capture that spirit.

Enjoy your stay at the watermill in Italy

Painting tutor Mike Willdridge took the picture (left) of a dried-out sunflower wearing his floppy painting hat. He asks: “Have I spent too long under the Tuscan sun?”

Painting tutor Sandra Strohschein took the picture of her husband Keith (right) planting a kiss on the cheek of an astonished painting guest, Polly Moseley, while Robert Christopher caught fellow guest Emily Muhlberger jumping for joy during Andrew Geeson’s painting holiday (left). And Ali Farr captured her friend (centre) Bex Foy taking a well-deserved rest after a hard painting day during Claire Warner’s course in September. (The bottle of beer is wholly coincidental!)

Having creative Fun at the mill in Tuscany

And finally, thinking of beer, here’s Chris Davies, a non-painting partner on Nel Whatmore and Rebecca de Mendonça’s pastel course, building up his strength during lunch at the Al Castello trattoria (right). The writing on the wall is translated as: “In wine there is wisdom; In beer there is strength; In water – bacteria!”

Don’t forget the Watermill photographic competition

Photographic competition at the watermill

All those pictures remind us that we are still taking entries for our Watermill photographic competition. And it’s human life that interests us most! Serious or not-so-serious.

First prize in the competition goes to the photograph we judge to be the one that most reflects the ambiance of the mill and we are particularly interested in shots that show our ‘students’ in action, both at ‘work’ and play. Or atmospheric shots of the Watermill and grounds. The picture above (left), for example, by Watermill guest Yildiz Diab, is of the evening shadows under the vine verandah, just before we sat down to enjoy our pre-prandial aperitivi.

And we’ve always liked this picture (above right) by Michelle Kent of her partner Terry Jarvis demonstrating to two enthusiastic students.

Don't forget our Photographic competition

The winner of our photography competition will be offered a free week-long creative holiday at the Watermill in 2019, of his or her choice, subject to availability. There will be five runner-up prizes, of £GBP 200 off a creative holiday at The Watermill in 2019, subject to availability.

You can find out more by clicking here. Please join in the fun and submit your best photos taken during your visit this year (or in a previous year).

A vivacious video by painting tutor Mike Willdridge

Mike's Video

The picture above is of a chapel in the village of Verrucola, where we go out on location on Mondays during our painting weeks. You can see the whole video, which lasts little more than 30 seconds, by clicking here.

We had a wonderful time with Mike last week and we’re looking forward to welcoming him again next year. You can find out all about Mike’s 2019 painting course by clicking here..

If you’d like to join him and make your own vivacious painting of Verrucola and all the other beautiful locations near the mill, we’d be delighted to welcome you here. We already have six bookings for Mike’s 2019 course, so it’s time to make your Early Bird reservation.

Don’t take our word for it!

Comments from the watermill's guests

Here are just a few of the dozens of comments we’ve had already this year from our Watermill creative courses guests. It makes us blush, but we are so happy to be adding to the sum total of human happiness!

I have never received such great treatment on a holiday. You all couldn't have been kinder. Everything was 5-star, from the food to the bedrooms, to all of your staff. It couldn't have been any better. Your organisation of the week was amazing, down to the very last detail.

Thanks for such a wonderful week! It had everything: fun, knowledge, good food and drink. Like a week out of time.

Painting at the watermill's riverside in Tuscany

Everything I dreamt of and more. The group that are now precious friends made the experience even better. Excellent accommodations and cuisine. The hospitality was 5 star! BRAVO.

It was although everything was magically suspended for a week and all I had to do was to show up for one delightful painting session after another. Through your hospitality I felt part of a big family by the end of the week. Thank you for making my week so special.

And there are many more. Our thanks to everyone for their very kind comments. Why don’t you come and join us find out what all the fuss is about?

Watermill in Tuscany's Painting NewsPAINTING NEWS

A warm Watermill welcome to Jude Scott

A Painting by Jude Scott at the watermill in Italy

We are very pleased to welcome another talented Australian artist to the Watermill team. She is Jude Scott from Western Australia and she has been creating, painting and teaching for many years.

She will be with us for two special courses in watercolours (& acrylics and oils) from Saturday 17 August to Saturday, 24 August 2019 and from Saturday 24 August to Saturday 31 August 2019.

Jude tells us that she loves watercolours for “their immediacy, unpredictability, translucency, dazzling colours and powerful tones” but she also paints in, and is happy to teach in, acrylics and oils. She says: "I love a new challenge and paint all subjects - faces, florals, boats and landscapes”.

Here is another watercolour of hers, of Winter roses from her garden, with a favourite little Chinese teapot.

As for teaching, Jude says: “I love sharing what I have learnt over many years of painting and it is always a thrill watching ‘the artist within’ emerge from each individual student I strongly encourage students to develop their own unique style of brush strokes and mark making: just relax, be brave, don’t forget to breathe and the rest will surely follow.”

One of her previous students said: “Jude was truly amazing, great tempo, strong knowledge base, strong interpersonal skills, just the right mix of doing and listening.” And another added: “She catered for the individual, encouraging a personal approach of expression, whilst at the same time teaching sound techniques. Her outgoing and bright personality really made her classes fun.”

 Jude Scott

You can learn all about Jude and see more of her paintings on her Tutor Profile page on the Watermill website, by clicking here

We have already six bookings for Jude’s first week (17-24 August), two of whom are non-painting partners, so we have room for seven or eight more painters. Currently, Jude's second week (24-31 August 2019) is fully booked, but there may be cancellations, so if you’re interested in that week please also let us know and we will put you on the waiting list.

Creative writing News at the watermill in ItalyCREATIVE WRITING NEWS

Jo’s back next year for another amazing ‘life stories’ week

Ewa in the market

We had a wonderful Write the Stories of your Life week here in August with Jo Parfitt with a delightful group not only learning the secrets of successful writing but also enjoying some of the sights – and tastes – of Lunigiana, the unspoilt region of Tuscany that surrounds the Watermill. And as we go to press for this newsletter, we are in the middle of another inspiring week-long course.

Above are some of the August group (an august group, too!) on the steps of the castle at nearby Verrucola, after enjoying a short walk around the village, and a visit to a local artist’s house, followed by a delicious lunch in a proper Italian trattoria.

Our ‘life stories’ guests also work hard on their writing, with morning teach-ins with Jo, afternoon writing homework and evening feedback sessions under the shade of te vine verandah.

Jo Parfitt

Jo Parfitt is an author, journalist, teacher, blogger, conference speaker and poet. She has published 32 books herself, has helped more than 100 authors get into print and more than 1,000 people to begin writing.

She's an inspiring, compassionate and encouraging teacher: her motto is 'sharing what I know to help others to grow'.

Rebecca

The Write Your Life Stories creative writing course is designed to help you produce your best work, to find your true writer's 'voice' and to write authentically. Among other things, you’ll discover the secret of SPICE, the seven steps to writing life stories. Jo says: "The course at the watermill will provide a safe haven in which to unlock your creativity, write from your heart and hone your writing craft. Sessions at the mill will empower students to write in a compelling way that makes real experiences come to life."

Here are a couple of comments from guests on Jo’s August course at the Watermill:
“The most magical trip to Tuscany, which will stay with me forever!” “It is a very special and beautiful place and everything was organised so perfectly. Jo is a great tutor and we all had an amazing time.”

Finding your Muse at the mill in Tuscany

The workshop will include several methods and genres and is perfect for anyone wanting to write about their own lives for an effective journal, memoir or blog. If you would enjoy an injection of inspiration in a safe and supportive environment this course is for you. It is appropriate for students of any level. Come and find your muse in the Watermill and its gardens.

ITALIAN LANGUAGE NEWS

Ben tornato to Francesca

Francesca la Sala

We are delighted that our old friend Francesca La Sala will be joining us again for our unique Italian Language week next year. She’s been travelling all over the world in the last few years but is now back in her native Lunigiana and will be with us for another inspiring language course. That’s Francesca, right, explaining the intricacies of the language on the vine verandah. You can join Francesca, soaking up Italian and enjoying la bella vita Italiana from Saturday 11 May to Saturday 18 May 2019.

This really is a ‘course with a difference’. Not only are there formal lessons on the vine verandah (some 20 hours in the week), but we also make trips and excursions to savour the natural beauty of Lunigiana, the area around the mill, to explore its history and culture, to sample its traditional foods – and above all, to meet the people, speak Italian, and practise what you’ve learned.

Italian group in the watermill's garden

The Watermill has teamed up again with the prestigious language school Langues Services in Florence to design a week in which people can learn Italian in the most natural and enjoyable way. Your immersion into the language and culture of real Italians will be customised for you, to suit your curiosity and your interests, helping you to treasure everything you learn and make it a seamless part of who you are.

A comment from a guest on this year’s course: “Our teacher was brilliant and the lessons were always engaging, and all the other staff were remarkable in their efforts to make the week so perfect. I enjoyed every second. I loved the tranquillity and the natural beauty of the river as well as the wonderful food and convivial company...”
