Presenting Tom Marsh

Tom’s teaching approach
Tom Marsh says:
“My teaching approach is to help student painters develop a stronger sense of composition, using shape and tonal contrast to build a painting. We will explore the oil medium, working wet-on-wet, en plein air, and focusing on brush language.
“Working with smaller groups allows me to demonstrate my process while also spending time one-to-one with each student, helping them navigate their individual challenges. I believe we all see the world in our own unique way, and I greatly value supporting painters in finding their own voice.”
About Tom
Tom is a member of both the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, with his work regularly exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London. He also serves on the judging panel for the prestigious annual summer exhibition of The Hampstead Art Society.
Growing up in New Zealand, Tom was introduced to oil painting at an early age by his father, and it was during his childhood that his deep appreciation for light and shadow first took root. At just 16, Tom was accepted as a member of the Society of Architectural Illustrators, marking the beginning of his professional journey.
Tom later honed his craft with a degree in Illustration from the University of Kent at Canterbury.
The stunning landscapes and dynamic light of New Zealand continue to influence Tom’s work today. Now based in Battle, he draws inspiration from the local countryside, coastline, marine environments, and the vibrant energy of London. An avid practitioner of the plein air tradition, Tom captures the ever-changing nuances of light in his oil paintings, bringing the world around him to life on canvas.
