Marci and her Bohus-inspired cowl
Bohus Stickning (Bohus Knitting) began in the Bohuslän area of Sweden, near Gothenburg, as relief work for the families of unemployed quarrymen. It became synonymous with quality and high fashion in the years between 1939 and 1969.
“Bohus knitting was known particularly for its sweaters of fine gauge, using yarns blending fine local wools and angora (angora was more accessible during war time than wool!), using often more than 2 colors per row (up to 7) and purl stitches for a unique blending of color not found in other colorwork.”
In the early 1990s, a Bohus knitting revival began with patterns being reproduced, and now are available from Pernille Silfverberg at Angora Garnet, located in the northern Bohuslän area of Sweden. This class at The Watermill at Posara is designed as a review of all the techniques used in the making of these fine garments.
“To knit this cowl, you will learn how to organize and manage more than two colors in a round, including purl stitches, how to do a provisional cast on, and grafting. Yarns used are fingering weight with a fine kid mohair/silk blend stranded along with the main color to give a slightly fuzzy angora effect. This yarn is also used as a single strand to line the inside of the cowl so that yarn floats are covered.”
Other techniques used in Bohus sweater knitting, although not used in this cowl, will be reviewed, including mattress stitch seaming and short row shaping (standard and German). It is helpful if students have prior experience knitting in the round but no other skills are necessary.
